White lions
Four white lion cubs have been born in Toronto Zoo. This is fantastic news because we think there are only 300 white lions in the wild.
The African lions' habitat varies from the grasslands of east Africa to the sands of the Kalahari Desert. They may be the King of the Beasts, but they are in great danger from their main enemy: humans. Lions need large territories to hunt successfully. But lions are losing ground to people in Africa. With less and less land and prey available to them, they sometimes resort to killing farmers' animals. To protect their animals, farmers shoot and poison the lions.
Lions live in groups called prides. There can be from from 3 to 30 lions in a pride. A pride contains many females and their young, and a few males. The lionesses rule the pride, working together to hunt and raise the cubs. But the adult males play an important role as well. They guard the pride and protect its territory.
Lions have some behaviours that are like cats. They are very good climbers and are often seen up in trees checking the area for prey. Lions sleep up to 21 hours a day!
