Maths Qs
Uncle Andrew has spent 50 hours on James' website so far. He thinks it might take him 2 hours to do each new webpage. How many hours in total does he estimate he'll have spent on James' website once he's done 25 more webpages?
The Jones family live with their two pet geckos. In their home there are 14 legs. How many people are there in the Jones family?
Mr Smith lives with his Pomeranian dogs. There are 82 legs altogether. How many dogs does he have?
You are the boss of a zoo. You have £100,000 to buy some animals. You would like some white lions that cost £10,000 each. You would also like tigers, which are £4,000 each. You want to spend all your money. Work out 6 different ways you can spend all your money on animals.
In a pond there are some lily pads. Every day the lily pads double in size. If it takes 6 days for the lily pads to cover all of the pond, how long will it take for the lily pads to cover half of the pond?
A pond's area is 8x8 squares which equals 64 squares. At the start the area of the lily pads in the pond is 1 square. Half of the pond's area is 32 squares.
The lily pads double in size each day.
- At the end of day 1 the lily pads have doubled from 1 square to 2 squares. The growth is shown by the 1 in the green square.
- At the end of day 2 the lily pads have doubled from 2 squares to 4 squares. The growth is shown by the 2 in the green squares.
- At the end of day 3 the lily pads have doubled to 8 squares. The growth is shown by the area 3.
- At the end of day 4 they have doubled to 16 squares. Area 4 shows the growth.
- At the end of day 5 they have doubled to 32 squares. This is half of the pond. Area 5 shows the growth.
- At the end of day 6 they have doubled to 64 squares. Area 6 shows the growth. It takes 6 days of doubling to cover all the pond.
Just as doubling half of the pond makes a whole pond, doubling half of anything makes a whole. The opposite is true: halving a whole makes a half. Once the whole pond is covered if we were to go back in time the size of the lily pads would halve each day we went back. Going back one day from day 6 to day 5 means the 64 squares of lily pads is halved and equals 32 squares.
Logic puzzle
Each animal is worth a number. Work out what number each animal stands for. Each type of animal is worth a different number. To help you are told what number the animals in a row add up to, and what number the animals in a column add up to.
For example the cows and the rabbit in the bottom row add up to 13. All cows are worth the same, but a cow cannot be the same number as a rabbit.
