Octopus
There are many different kinds of octopus. This is a giant Pacific octopus. It can grow as long as a bus.
An octopus has 3 hearts and 8 arms! Its arms have suckers.
Suckers stick to things.
Its mouth is called a beak. The beak is strong and hard. It is underneath the octopus in the middle of all its arms. The rest of the octopus is soft; it has no bones.
Seals and sea lions try to eat the octopus. So the octopus hides in small caves or cracks in rocks. |
It can change colour to help it hide too.
If it sees danger it can squirt black ink so the other animal cannot see. Then the octopus can swim away.
The octopus comes out at night to hunt. It hunts fish and lobsters. The giant octopus may try to eat sharks!
A lobster is a good meal for an octopus.
Octopuses catch animals with its arms. As it grips its prey, it bites them and squirts a poison called venom. The venom stops the animal moving.
