Astronauts
Tim Peake's launch into space
Britain's first astronaut
Helen Sharman was Britain's first astronaut. She was a chemist at a chocolate company. Her life changed in 1989 when she replied to a radio advert asking for people to apply to become an astronaut. The advert was by the Russian space agency. It decided she was the best person out of 13,000 people who replied to the advert. She spent 18 months training in Star City, which is near Moscow in Russia. She travelled with Russian astronauts to the Mir space station in 1991. During her eight days in space she carried out scientific experiments.
