Panda
A giant panda is a type of bear. Pandas are similar to other bears in how they look and the way they walk and climb. They seem pretty quiet, but giant pandas can roar and growl.
Bamboo is the most important plant in a giant panda's diet. They spend at least 12 hours each day eating bamboo. Pandas grasp bamboo stalks with their five fingers and a special wristbone. They use their teeth to peel off the tough outer layers of the stalk to reveal the soft inner tissue. They also eat the leaves.

New!
When giant pandas are born they are only the size of a stick of butter, and they're hairless and helpless. The panda mother gives great care to her tiny cub. She usually cradles it in one paw and holds it close to her chest. For several days after birth, the mother does not leave her den, not even to eat or drink!
In the 1960s, only 3 out of every 10 panda cubs born in zoos survived. Today 9 out of every 10 survive. One reason for this success is that we have discovered baby cubs need help to poo. If they don't poo, they'll die.
China has the only zoo in the world to successfully breed pandas and then release them into the wild. Before release, the pandas must go through a series of trials that test their abilities to survive in the wild.
