Space pooch
Pupils at a primary school in Lancashire have sent a toy dog into the atmosphere as part of a science project. The kids managed to send Sam the Dog up into the sky by attaching him to a helium balloon. The helium balloon worked because helium is lighter than air. Sam reached a height of 15.5 miles above the ground before the balloon burst and he fell back to Earth along with his space equipment. The school found the space equipment using a Global Positioning System (GPS) tracker, but, alas, Sam is nowhere to be found.
Unfortunately Sam did not reach the edge of space, which is 62 miles above the ground. And if Sam had flown 50 miles above Earth, he might have earned Astronaut Wings like the pilots of the experimental aircraft, the North American X-15 rocket plane.
