Delta-wing planes
A delta wing is a wing that looks like a triangle. Delta is a Greek word for our letter d. The Greeks' letter for delta was the shape of a triangle.

All the planes below are supersonic - faster than the speed of sound (760 mph at sea level and 660 mph high up in the air).

The Blackbird
The Blackbird was the fastest plane with jet engines. It could fly over 2,100 miles per hour. This is about 3 times the speed of sound. No plane flying today is faster. Only the X-15 rocket plane was faster.
The turbojet engine could also work as a ramjet. A conical spike at the front of each engine allowed air to bypass the engines. The air went directly to the afterburners and ejector nozzles.

When the Blackbird flew 2,100 miles per hour it flew:
- 35 miles in 1 minute
- 105 miles in 3 minutes
- 630 miles in 6 minutes
- ___ miles in 10 minutes
- ___ miles in 30 minutes
- 2,100 miles in 60 minutes
